History of the Chair of Criminal Law

Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań was established originally in 1919 as the Polish University in Poznan, but the name was soon changed to University of Poznan. The Faculty of Law and Economy, grounded by the Prof. Antoni Peretiatkowicz from Lvov (currently Ukraine), form the very start encompassed the teaching of the Penal Law. As one of the first prominent figures in history of teaching of the Penal Law in Poznan prof. Józef Bossowski (1882-1957) has to mentioned, the author of the several publications devoted to the historical development of the substantive material law as well as the criminal procedure. Ever since, the study of the Penal Law constitutes an integral element of the scientific landscape of the Adam Mickiewicz University and most recently it has had important impact on the intended changes of the vigilant Penal Code and the development of the theory of Law.

Among the most distinguished professors of the Criminal Law prof. dr Jan Józef Bossowski, prof. dr Tadeusz Cyprian, prof. zw. dr hab. Krystyna Daszkiewicz, prof. UAM dr hab. Bogusław Janiszewski, prof. zw. dr hab. dr h.c. Andrzej Jan Szwarc, prof. zw. dr hab. Aleksander Ratajczak, prof. UAM dr hab. Maciej Tarnawski, prof. dr. hab. Aleksander Tobis deserve special attention. Below we will be briefly presenting some of their achievements and personalities.
